Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness Slot Review
96.59% is the highest return attached to any Rich Wilde title in our lobby, and it belongs to the entry that looks least like the rest of the series. Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness throws out reels and paylines completely, dropping the explorer onto a 5x5 grid where symbols arrive in clusters and disappear in cascades. Play'n GO released it in 2019 and pointed the whole thing at Lovecraft rather than Egypt. The Tome of Madness slot is the strangest game in the franchise, and comfortably the most mechanically interesting one.
Theme, Graphics & Sound
Rich Wilde spends this game in a candlelit chamber rather than a tomb, hunched over a book he should probably have left shut. The Cult of Cthulhu is the target, and Play'n GO leans into the source material harder than a slot usually dares. A Lovecraft quote opens the game. The palette runs to bruised purples and sickly greens, and a low drone under the soundtrack gets more insistent as the portal beside the grid fills.
That portal is not decoration. It sits down the left-hand side and visibly charges as you win, so the audio, the visuals and the maths all tell you the same story at the same moment. Few slots bother to synchronize those three things. When the portal finally opens, the screen change is dramatic enough that you know what happened without reading a word of it.
The grid itself stays readable throughout, which matters more than it sounds. Cascading cluster games can turn into visual soup once symbols start vanishing three and four times in a single spin, and this one never quite does.
RTP, Volatility & Hit Frequency
The 96.59% return is the number keeping this game in circulation years after release, and it deserves context: nothing else in the Wilde catalogue on our platform gets above 96.29%.
Volatility is high, though the shape of it is unusual. Because wins arrive in cascading clusters, small returns land reasonably often. What is rare is a sequence long enough to charge the portal all the way, and that sequence holds nearly all the value. Long stretches of tiny cluster wins that never build into anything are the normal experience here.
The trade-off shows up in the ceiling. Maximum win is 2,000x your stake, well under half of what Book of Dead and Tome of Insanity offer. You are buying a better return rate and giving up the top end to get it.
| Spec | Value | Note |
| Minimum cluster | 4 symbols | Connected horizontally or vertically, never diagonally |
| Portal thresholds | 7, 14, 27, 42 | Each one unlocks a different effect |
| Special Wilds unlocked at | 7 charged symbols | Two land on random grid positions |
| Free round awarded | 1 spin | Length is counted in portal effects, not spins |
| Starting portal effects | 3 | Granted the moment the round opens |
| Maximum portal effects | 7 | One more for every 3 symbols past 42 |
| Multiplier Wild value | 2x | Applies to any cluster it completes |
| Mega Wild size | 2x2 | Cthulhu, free round only |
| Release date | 27 June 2019 | Fourth entry in the Rich Wilde line |
Symbols & Payouts
Winning clusters need four or more matching symbols touching horizontally or vertically. Diagonals do not count, which catches people out in their first few spins.
The paytable splits cleanly in two. Four themed objects sit at the top, led by the Cthulhu medallion, and four coloured gems fill the bottom. Two wilds sit outside that ladder entirely and matter far more than either group.
| Symbol | Role | Position on the paytable |
| Cthulhu medallion | Highest-paying symbol | Top of the high-pay group |
| Dagger | High pay | Second tier |
| Ring | High pay | Third tier |
| Skull | High pay | Fourth tier |
| Coloured gems (purple, red, blue, green) | Low pays | Bottom of the paytable |
| Necronomicon | Special Wild | Substitutes for every paying symbol |
| Rich Wilde | Multiplier Wild | Replaces high-value symbols and doubles the cluster |
| Cthulhu Mega Wild | 2x2 wild block | Other World round only, once every eye mark is open |
The two wilds are worth separating, because they do not behave alike. The Necronomicon substitutes for everything on the board, high pays and gems alike, so it slots into any cluster that needs one more symbol. The Rich Wilde wild is fussier: it stands in for high-value symbols only, and doubles whatever cluster it completes. That restriction sounds like a downside until a Rich Wilde lands next to three Cthulhu medallions.
Play'n GO reused this grid-and-cluster framework across several titles, and Reactoonz slot is the best known of them, with a near-identical return and none of the horror atmosphere.
Tome of Madness Bonus Features
Everything in this game routes through one meter, and understanding it is most of the job.
Portal Effects
The portal charges by counting symbols removed during a single winning sequence. Cross a threshold and something unlocks.
At 7 charged symbols, two Special Wilds drop onto random grid positions. At 14, the Abyss effect joins in and clears every symbol sharing a row or column with a Special Wild. At 27, the Void arrives and wipes every instance of one chosen symbol off the grid. Each of those exists to restart a cascade that was about to stall.
Eye Marks
Purple-framed positions appear at random around the grid. Land a winning cluster on one and two Special Wilds are added straight away. They are the quiet engine of the base game, because they extend sequences that would otherwise have ended, and extended sequences are the only route the portal has to its top threshold.
Other World Free Round
At 42 symbols in a single sequence the portal opens and the free round begins. It is worth pausing on what that threshold actually demands. The grid holds 25 positions in total, so clearing 42 of them without the cascade chain ever breaking means the board has to empty and refill itself close to twice over on one spin. That is why the round shows up so rarely, and why the Abyss and Void effects, which exist purely to keep a dying cascade alive, are the difference between a good sequence and a triggered bonus.
Calling it a free spins round undersells how odd it is, because you get exactly one spin. Length is measured in portal effects instead, and you start with three. Every additional three symbols collected past 42 adds another effect, to a maximum of seven.
The round ends when the effects run out and no cascade is still running. Fill the portal completely while you are in there, opening every eye mark, and the Cthulhu Mega Wild appears as a 2x2 block that walks down the grid with each cascade. Almost every large win this game produces traces back to that one moment.
How to Play
Ten cents is the smallest bet the grid will accept, and it scales to $100 without changing a thing about how the portal behaves. Pick a figure from the bar beneath the grid and spin.
No paylines need configuring and there is no gamble feature to decline. The one decision that genuinely matters is session length, since the portal rewards volume rather than luck on any single spin. Anyone comfortable with a conventional cascade game such as Energoonz slot will pick up the rhythm immediately, though the charging meter adds a layer that game never had.
A buy option is available if grinding the portal up from zero holds no appeal.
The Rich Wilde Line-Up
Eight more Wilde-universe titles sit in the BetFury lobby, and lining up their return figures shows where this one actually stands.
| Game | RTP | Max Win |
| Book of Dead | 96.21% | 5,000x |
| Rich Wilde and the Tome of Insanity | 96.20% | 5,000x |
| Rich Wilde and the Tome of Dead | 96.21% | n/a |
| Rich Wilde and the Shield of Athena | 96.00% | n/a |
| Rich Wilde and the Amulet of the Dead | 96.29% | n/a |
| Rich Wilde and the Pearls of Vishnu | 96.17% | 2,000x |
| Rich Wilde and the Wandering City | 96.20% | n/a |
| Scroll of Dead | 96.28% | 7,500x |
No other entry gets within three tenths of a percentage point of the return here. The two games that beat it on maximum win both hand back less per spin over the long run, which is the bargain this whole design is built around.
Worth the Spin
The best return in the series, the most inventive bonus structure Play'n GO has ever attached to Rich Wilde, and a ceiling that will disappoint anyone chasing five figures. Load the demo first and watch how seldom the portal actually reaches 42 before committing real funds, because that single number decides whether the game suits you. Patient grid players will get along with it very well.
