Age of the Gods Slot Review

Why does a 2016 slot with a 95.02% RTP still anchor a franchise that runs to 29 titles in our lobby? Two reasons. A coin-pick bonus can chain four different free-games modes in one trigger, and a four-tier progressive jackpot can land on any spin at any stake. Age of the Gods is the Playtech release that started the whole line, and it plays like a first draft that got most of the big decisions right: five reels, 20 fixed paylines, medium volatility and a stake ceiling of $40. The Age of the Gods slot will not win a beauty contest against 2025 releases, but its bonus round asks you to make more choices than most modern games do.

Theme, Graphics & Sound

The reels sit in front of Mount Olympus, with waterfalls running down the cliffs behind the grid. The gods carry the visual weight. Athena, Zeus, Poseidon, Hercules, Aphrodite and Hades are painted in a detailed, almost classical style, and each one gets a short animation when it lands in a win. Hades glows purple, which is a useful hint, because his symbol plays the villain in the bonus round.

Sound is orchestral and a little theatrical, building when scatters drop. Playtech has since taken its art team to very different settings in 2024 releases like Feng Shui Flip, yet the 2016 artwork here still looks deliberate rather than dated. The game runs in the browser on phones, tablets and desktop with the same layout, so there is nothing to download.

RTP, Volatility & Stakes

The return here is 95.02%, roughly a point below the typical modern slot. That gap pays for something: a slice of each stake goes into the linked jackpot pool, so the base game gives back a little less to fund it. Volatility is medium. Of the 10 other franchise titles compared further down, nine list a higher RTP on our site, and most fall between 95.9% and 96.6%. On paper, the original is one of the stingier entries.

You can spin for as little as $0.20 across all 20 lines, and the top stake is $40. Every figure on this page is quoted in dollars, which is why USDC betting suits this game well: a $1 spin stays a $1 spin, with no coin price drifting under your balance mid-session.

The laurel wreath wild covers for every symbol except the scatter, and it is the piece that turns two-god lines into paying ones. Then there is Pantheon of Power: line up five different god symbols on a single payline and the game pays a flat 10x your total bet. It happens rarely, but when it does the award is fixed, so a $2 spin returns exactly $20 on top of any other wins.

Hades is the one god you never want to see during the bonus. On the reels he is simply another premium symbol; on the pick board he ends the feature.

Age of the Gods Bonus Features

Newer Playtech titles such as Quad Link Count stack several features into one screen. This 2016 original keeps it to two separate routes: the free-games pick and the Power jackpots.

Free Games Pick

Get three or more game-logo scatters anywhere in view and the reels give way to a board of 20 face-down coins. You flip them one at a time. Match three of the same god and you play that god's round of nine free games. Flip Hades and the whole feature closes. Clear a round without him, though, and you go straight back to the board for another pick, so a single scatter hit can run through two, three or all four gods before Hades appears.

Athena Free Games

Every one of the nine spins carries a random multiplier between 2x and 5x. This is the most consistent of the four rounds, since no spin pays at the bare base value.

Zeus Free Games

The multiplier climbs in steps: 1x for spins one to three, 2x for four to six, and 3x for the last three. A wild stays locked in the centre of the reels for the whole round, which gives the late 3x spins a head start on every line through the middle.

Poseidon Free Games

Poseidon's trident fires up to five extra wilds onto the reels on each free spin. On a 20-line grid, five fresh wilds per spin give this round the highest single-spin ceiling of the four.

Hercules Free Games

Hercules sits on reel 3 as a stacked wild for all nine spins, and any other Hercules symbol that lands also turns wild. Wins lean on the middle reel, so results arrive more steadily than in Poseidon's round but rarely as big.

Side by side, Athena is the safest round for a decent total, Zeus rewards patience because two-thirds of his multiplier value sits in the last six spins, Poseidon swings hardest, and Hercules lands somewhere between them.

Power Jackpots

The jackpot bonus can start at random after any spin, whatever you bet, although higher stakes raise the odds of getting in. Once it starts, a win is guaranteed. You pick from a grid until three symbols of one tier match: Power, Extra Power, Super Power or Ultimate Power. The top tier is seeded in six figures and grows with play across the network. The jackpots do not run in demo mode, so the free version shows you the free games but never the pick for real money.

How the Sequels Compare

Most titles below share the same four-tier jackpot network as the original, so the real differences come down to return, grid and line count. Every figure comes from each game's own page on our site.

The trend is clear: later releases moved to wider grids and more ways, and nearly all of them nudged the RTP up. The original remains the simplest of the set, with fixed lines and no reel-shape gimmicks.

How to Play

Set your stake with the plus and minus buttons. All 20 paylines are always active, so the only choice is the total bet. Hit spin, or use autoplay for a set run of spins. Wins pay left to right on adjacent reels from the first reel.

Try the Age of the Gods slot in demo first. It plays the free-games pick and all four god rounds with virtual credits, which is the fastest way to see how often Hades cuts a bonus short. When you switch to real money, keep in mind the jackpot odds scale with stake size, so a $0.20 session and a $10 session are not quite the same game.

If 20 fixed lines start to feel repetitive, Playtech's live table Mega Fire Blaze Roulette offers a completely different pace from the same studio.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Four free-games modes with genuinely different maths, reached through a coin pick that can chain several rounds from one trigger.
  • The Power jackpot bonus always pays one of four tiers once it starts, at any stake.
  • Pantheon of Power adds a fixed 10x total-bet award to the base game.

Cons

  • The 95.02% RTP trails nine of the 10 other sequels in the comparison above.
  • A $40 top stake is low for high-rollers.
  • Hades can close the pick board before a single free game is played.

Final Thoughts

Age of the Gods earns its place when the bonus pick is the point. Four god rounds, each with its own multiplier logic, make one scatter hit feel like several features in a row, and the guaranteed jackpot pick keeps the base game from going flat. Anyone chasing return on paper should look elsewhere, because the RTP and the $40 cap are real limits. If those numbers bother you, the Greek pantheon gets a higher-return treatment in Play'n GO's Rise of Olympus 100, which runs at 96.20%. For jackpot hunters who like a little strategy in their bonus rounds, the original still holds up.
